Obituary for Susan Ann Hansen Smith

Susan Ann Hansen Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father on June 26, 2026, in St. George, Utah, at the age of 84. 
Susan was born on May 5, 1942, in Provo, Utah, to Robert Grant Hansen and Virginia May Pullen Hansen. She spent her childhood in the historic Hansen family home at 202 East Center Street in Provo, where six generations of the Hansen family lived. She cherished stories of her father’s service during World War II and fondly remembered visits to the family’s Hansen Candy Factory. 
Following the passing of her mother, Susan was blessed when her father married Phyllis Robinson (“Nanny”), expanding her family with stepsiblings Gordon Bullock and Joan Richan, whom she loved dearly. 
Susan attended Maeser School, Farrer Junior High School and graduated from Provo High School on May 27, 1960. She also attended Rowland Hall School for Girls in Salt Lake City during the 1957–1958 school year, where she enjoyed season tickets to University of Utah productions. 
As a young woman, Susan’s first jobs were at One Hour Martinizing Cleaners and later as an usherette and candy girl at Provo’s Academy Theater. She was also a finalist in the 1960 Colorado Miss Titan Beauty Pageant. Gifted with exceptional administrative skills, she could type nearly 100 words per minute and mastered shorthand, talents that would serve her throughout her professional career. 

Susan briefly attended Brigham Young University, where a blind date introduced her to the love of her life, Steven Arlo Smith. Their first date was night skiing at Sundance, followed by a whirlwind romance filled with laughter—including a memorable pillow fight. They became engaged on the Fourth of July, Susan’s favorite holiday, and were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 26, 1966, beginning almost 60 years of devoted marriage. 
Together they built a beautiful family, raising two sons, Craig Steven Smith and Eric Robert Smith. She was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her life. 

Susan’s faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of everything she did. Baptized on February 25, 1951, she remained a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She faithfully served in numerous callings, including Young Womens, Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society President, temple worker in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple, and Church Service Missionary. 

Professionally, Susan dedicated more than 30 years to Public Service Company of Colorado, where she served as a respected Division Manager. Her organizational skills, work ethic, and genuine care for others earned her the admiration of colleagues and lifelong friends. 
Susan lived in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and finally St. George, Utah. Wherever she lived, she quickly made lasting friendships through her warmth, kindness, and infectious optimism. 
She loved family history and was very involved as an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP). She was an accomplished genealogist who devoted countless hours to preserving family histories, organizing photographs, and documenting stories that will bless generations to come. She believed that family history was one of the greatest gifts she could leave behind. 
She enjoyed traveling with Steve and their family throughout the western United States, especially to Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and California. She treasured special vacations to Hawaii and two Caribbean cruises. 
Susan found joy in life’s simple pleasures: playing Canasta, Solitaire, and Five Crowns with family and friends, enjoying Ruffles potato chips with French onion dip, and always insisting on “the real thing” an ice-cold regular Coca-Cola. 
More than anything else, Susan will be remembered for her unwavering faith, positive spirit, incredible organization, genuine kindness, and her remarkable ability to make everyone feel loved. Her legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the friendships she nurtured, and the countless lives she quietly blessed through faithful service. 
She is survived by her husband, Steven Arlo Smith; her sons, Craig Steven Smith (Marney Smith) and Eric Robert Smith; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Robert Grant Hansen and Virginia May Pullen Hansen, Phyllis Robinson (“Nanny”), stepsiblings, Gordon Bullock and Joan Richan, and great grandson, Everett Adams. 
Her family rejoices in the knowledge that through the Savior Jesus Christ, families are eternal. 
The family would like to thank many at Mission Hospice of St. George for their invaluable love, kindness and service to Sue. 
Viewing services will be held Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, at 4pm – 6pm in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stonebridge Ward building: 82 North Dixie Drive, St. George Utah. A graveside service will also be held for family and friends at Provo Cemetery: 610 S. State Street, Provo, Utah, Friday, July 10th at 10am (the service will be recorded and made available the following week).
